Seven months ago I saw Puss in Boots, and guess what trailer they showed? The Lorax. I instantly fell in love with it. I was struck by lighting. I went home and ranted about how great it’ll be, and totally forgot I had just seen Puss in Boots. I immediately made the first Lorax fanclub on deviantart. I update Lorax Movie News website everyday, and began drawing the Once-ler. I joined tumblr two weeks before the movie came out. Then I saw it with my family, and I was the only one who liked it. I discovered Once-ler art on tumblr, and then I realized that I wasn’t alone. A fandom was growing. I video chatted with internet friends for the first time ever. I cosplayed the Once-ler or the movie theater and my last anime convention. I learned how to knit. I started crying over fan fictions. I made pancakes every week. I started eating marshmallows. I downloaded the movie theater filmed copy, and now, I’ve seen it eight times. I’ve been annoying my real life friends for weeks, and have made a universe load of new friends here. I jumped from 2 followers to 700 followers in just two months. My road has been really fun, successful, and something I won’t forget.
How has your Lorax journey been? I’d love to hear everyone’s stories.
Saw the trailer last October. I found it here on tumblr, and I was really really excited (my favorite Dr. Seuss book!). I actually didn’t notice The Once-ler much. When the release date did roll around, I forgot about it entirely and was reminded by the 2nd graders I was reading to. (It was Dr. Seuss’ birthday, so I was reading his books to them.) We read “I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew”, then they requested “The Lorax”, and chatted about going to see it that night with their parents.
I couldn’t see it because it wasn’t in our theater yet, so I had to wait. Soon after, I noticed a handsome green-clad man on my dash. Then, I stumbled upon a rather bad quality in-theater recording of “How Bad Can I Be?”. I decided to watch, and I was really… surprised. (“Is that… The Once-ler? What did they do to him? Why and WHAT is he singing? Is he even singing? WHAT IS THIS NOISE??”) I didn’t like it. At all. I was actually ready to write off the whole film entirely based on that one scene!
However, as weeks passed, better quality recordings began popping up, and even though I hated it, I decided I could give it another try. Now, I am really REALLY glad I did. It actually began to grow on me. Soon, I was completely in love - That song was all I listened to for days! I followed Once-ler blogs, reblogged all the fanart, fell hard into the fandom, and prayed to actually see the movie soon. Then I did! I had to travel to another town, but I finally saw it! And it was really the greatest thing. Bravo, Illumination!
The obsession grew - I loved the Once-ler, I loved the music, I loved the film, and I loved the fandom. I still love all of it, and I think I will for a long long long time. We’re all like a family now, and I can’t imagine being without all of you, or this movie! (even if I hated it at first) <3
